Iron Filter for Well Water

Installation & Services for Northeast Ohio

Did you know that iron is an abundant natural element found throughout Ohio's ecosystem – including the groundwater that feeds your water supply? If you've ever noticed that your well water has a metallic taste or smell, or your washing machine, tub or shower are developing a rusty film, it could be due to high amounts of iron present. Ayers Well Drilling can help. Our expert team can assess your plumbing system and install an iron filter for well water that leaves your water looking and tasting better than ever.

Why is Iron a Concern in Well Water?

While iron in your well water is not a health issue, its rusty flavor can leave your water undrinkable - even at levels of iron as low as 0.3 ppm. Even boiling a pot of water for pasta can create an iron-aroma that leaves your food tasting off.

That's where iron water filters from Ayers Well Drilling come in. When you add an iron water filter to your well system, it eliminates iron particles before they enter your home's plumbing system – and your tap.

What Happens When You Don't Treat Your Well for Excess Iron?

If you live in Northeast Ohio and have a well water system in your home or business, you've likely experienced the effects of iron in your water. Iron is found in Ohio's soil and rocks where it dissolves into groundwater. Once that water reaches your tap, oxygen takes over turning the iron particles rusty. While these particles are often not visible to the naked eye, you'll notice them in other ways. Your water can taste metallic and your bath fixtures, washing machine and clothes can be left with a reddish-orange tint. Over time, these problems can add up. Water testing can determine the ppm of iron in your water supply, and comprehensive testing helps identify the right iron filter solution.

FAQ

  • Why is iron in well water a concern?

According to the Ohio EPA, iron is the fourth most common element in the Earth's crust. Wells utilize groundwater which is naturally exposed to these irons. While iron is safe in drinking water in small amounts, even safe amounts of iron should be filtered out as they can make water taste and smell rusty. Iron in your water can also discolor clothes and leave red residue on tubs, sinks, washing machines and other appliances that are exposed to water.

  • How do I know if my well water has high iron levels?

You can have it tested by a lab. However, the taste of your water – or red residue on your shower – can be a telltale sign that iron is present and needs to be treated. Testing can identify the type of iron and other common contaminants present.

  • What makes Ayers Well Drilling's iron water filter systems unique?

Our systems are designed to treat iron at the source using an oxidation process. They're low maintenance and typically do not require any harmful chemicals for cleaning.

  • How often does the iron filter system require maintenance?

Our iron water filter systems typically require regular maintenance every two years. The media bed in the filter tank will last about five to seven years (or longer, depending on use and flow rates) before it needs to be refilled.

  • Will the iron filter affect the taste and odor of my well water?

Yes – in a good way! Since these filters remove iron from your tap water, your water should taste much less metallic. Advanced filtration can also remove hydrogen sulfide and iron bacteria.

  • Can I install an iron filter system myself, or should I hire professionals?

A house iron filter is a complex system that requires professional installation and maintenance. An Ayers Well Drilling professional will assess your needs to recommend the best sizing and set up that will effectively remove iron from well water at your home's flow and pressure.

  • Is the iron filter system environmentally friendly?

Yes, our iron water filters are environmentally friendly. They only use air and water to self-clean.

  • How long does the installation process take?

Depending on your unit sizes, the iron water filter system should only take 2 to 4 hours to install.

  • Can the iron filter system be used for commercial wells?

Yes – our iron removal system can also be used for commercial and industrial applications, in addition to residential use. Different sizes accommodate varying water flow needs.
