What Is Water Softening?

Water softener systems use a special two tank design to remove minerals from water supplies, which helps to reduce water hardness. The first tank contains brine – often referred to as “salt” – and works through the ion exchange process. This advanced process is similar to using a magnet, where negatively charged brine beads attract positively charged minerals such as calcium and magnesium, eliminating them from the water.

The second tank contains the softened water, which can be programmed based on your family's needs to ensure it is always available for use. This process of ion exchange makes water softeners an effective solution to issues such as water stains and iron in your drinking water.

Water softeners with ion exchange process can be programmed to run at a rate that best suits your family's needs, ensuring that your water supplies are always of the highest quality.

Did you know that 85% of homes in the United States have from hard water?

According to a study conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey, hard water is a common problem in most households. Hard water is formed by the presence of heavy minerals like calcium and magnesium, which are naturally present in the earth's resources and in the water sourced from the local area. In Ohio, it's not uncommon to find hard water in homes.

While hard water is not harmful to human health, it can cause problems in pipes, appliances, skin, and bathroom fixtures. Hard water can leave unsightly stains on tubs and shower walls, dry out skin and hair, and cause white laundry to look dull and dingy. More seriously, it can cause buildup in pipes, reducing the flow of water and causing damage to faucets and fixtures over time.

For these reasons, many households rely on filtration systems like salt-based water softeners to remove these minerals from the water and ensure clean drinking water. City-treated water can also contain iron, which can lead to further staining. If you're concerned about the hardness of your water supply, WaterPro® offers a wide range of water softening solutions, including dual-tank water softeners and whole-home water systems, that can be customized to your household's specific needs and hardness level.

FAQ

  • Is softened water safe to drink?

Absolutely! While water softener systems use a salt for the softening process, the water itself will only contain a nominal amount of sodium. Over the course of a day, the sodium is equivalent to that found in a slide of white bread.

  • Do water softeners waste water?

No, water softeners do not waste water. They only treat and process the water you use, so there is no waste.

  • Does soft water feel slimy?

Soft water should leave a smooth feeling on skin. If you notice a slimy feel, it’s often soap residue! That’s because with a water softener you can use less soap to get the same amount of lather. Typically, if you’ve lived in a home without a water softener, adjusting the level of soap and shampoo you use might take some getting used to!

  • Is soft water good for your hair?

It’s actually better for your hair than hard water. It’s gentler and leaves less residue. Select units also remove chlorine from city water -- meaning blonde hair looks less brassy and color-treated hair stays truer to shade longer. Just remember that with soft water, you can use less shampoo and conditioner than with hard water – about half as much!

  • Is soft water safe to drink for dogs?

Yep! Just like you can safely drink softened water, so can your pups and cats.

  • How long does a water softener last?

The life of a water softener can vary depending on factors such as the type of water softener and the average water usage. Our WaterPro® water softeners come with a 5-year warranty on the brine tank, parts, and controls, plus a 10-year warranty on the mineral tank.

  • Are water softeners good for appliances?

Yes, water softeners are good for appliances such as dishwashers, washing machines, and hot water tanks as they reduce the buildup of water scale and minerals like calcium and magnesium. Soft water is also gentler on pipes, reducing the risk of iron rust and bacterial growth.

  • Do water softener systems use a lot of electricity?

Today’s high-efficiency water softeners prevent power loss cost just pennies a day to operate. Plus, some studies indicate that when you use a water softener, your appliances are less stressed and work more efficiently for longer.

  • Why Does my ice maker keep breaking?

It could be hard water! Scale buildup doesn’t just happen in your pipes. It can also be building up in your dishwasher, clothes washer, water heater and even your icemaker. According to a study by the Water Quality Association, hard water can cut the life of your appliances in half. Showerheads that run hard water get clogged up to 75% faster. Gas water heaters lose 50% of their efficiency over time. Investing in a water softener for home use can not only help prolong the life of your pipes – it can help keep your appliances running in top form and for longer. Commercial water softeners can keep water-using equipment operating at top form – and help the company’s community coffee maker last longer.

The key to getting the most out of water softener systems is to make the water the “right” level of soft.

Just like water that’s “too hard,” water that’s too soft can also be hard on pipes and plumbing. At Ayers, we’re experts on creating the right softener setting based on your specific water quality.
