Why is a PFAS Water Filter Important?

Since 1999, the CDC and EPA have been tracking the prevalence of PFAS in water sources and food, as well as the overall U.S. population. PFAS stands for per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances, and these groups of man-made chemicals are found in a wide range of products you likely use everyday – clothes, food packaging, non-stick cookware and more. PFAS chemicals have been in use since the 1940s, do not break down in the environment and have been shown to contaminate drinking water sources, along with fish and wildlife. These are likely the same water and food sources that you and your family consume.

While the long-term effects of PFAS on the human body are still unknown, animal studies have shown that the chemicals may possibly affect reproduction, the immune system, liver, cholesterol levels and is also a cause of thyroid disease. According to the EPA: “There are thousands of PFAS chemicals, and they are found in many different consumer, commercial, and industrial products. This makes it challenging to study and assess the potential human health and environmental risks.”

PFAS filter systems do exist to reduce the prevalence of PFAS in water. At Ayers Well Drilling we’ve had great success with both granular activated carbon (GAC) and reverse osmosis (RO) filtration systems. Because PFAS chemicals are hard to treat, these two systems offer the best defense against microscopic PFAS particles. These PFAS filter systems are of minimal maintenance. They are also reliable, efficient, and cost-effective, and can improve your water quality dramatically.

How it Works: Patented air injection & piston on the Control Valve adds air to the filter media tank during the draw cycle. The water then passes through trapped air in tank which oxidizes iron and sulfur (all in one tank). During regeneration, oxidized minerals are backwashed out, filter tank is replenished with oxygen from the atmosphere and the unit shifts back into service.
